For veterans transitioning from military life to civilian life, establishing a solid financial foundation is key to achieving long-term success and stability, and there are steps you can take to get there.

1) Create a budget: One of the most important steps you can take toward financial stability is creating a budget. Getting started can be difficult, but a budget will help you understand your financial situation and plan for the future.

2) Build an emergency fund: An emergency fund is a critical component of any financial plan. It’s the money you set aside for unexpected expenses, like car repairs or medical bills. The recommended amount is three to six months’ worth of living expenses, but even a small emergency fund is better than none. Start by setting aside a small amount from each paycheck until you reach your goal.

3) Consider your debt: Debt is a significant roadblock to financial stability, and it can be overwhelming for veterans already struggling with the transition to civilian life. However, ignoring your debt won’t make it go away. Start by creating a plan to pay off your debts systematically. Focus on paying off high-interest debt first, and consider debt consolidation.

4) Invest in retirement: It’s never too early (or too late) to start saving for retirement. If your military service didn’t already provide one, consider establishing your retirement account.
