Legacy Planning - Be a Difference-Maker

December 18, 2024

If we pass on money and material possessions without philosophies, values, and principles, I believe we’ve missed an opportunity. In fact, it may even be a disservice to our family and a dishonor to the loved ones who came before us.

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on a quote I heard: "Think about leaving something IN somebody rather than something FOR somebody." This sentiment resonates deeply. It reminds me that the most meaningful legacy isn’t just about wealth or belongings—it’s about the experiences and memories we create with loved ones, the values we instill, and the causes we support.

Legacy planning challenges us to think beyond our immediate family. It’s about making an impact that transcends generations, whether through personal connections or community contributions. Consider this: if you were to leave a significant sum of money to a family member, would it enhance their life, or could it unintentionally create challenges? On the other hand, what impact could that same sum have on a cause close to your heart, like a local charity or organization? The difference can be life-changing.

This isn’t to say that financial gifts to loved ones aren’t valuable—they certainly can be. But asking deeper questions about how and why we pass on wealth can lead to more intentional and meaningful decisions. Once you’ve reflected on these questions, it’s crucial to put your plans into writing.

Foundational documents like a Trust or a Will ensure your assets are distributed as you intend. Powers of Attorney and Living Wills appoint trusted individuals to make decisions on your behalf and clarify your wishes in critical situations. Beneficiary designations on retirement accounts or life insurance policies are equally important, as they often supersede estate documents.

Legacy planning weaves together financial and emotional elements, creating a comprehensive approach to impact future generations. The goal is to make a difference IN someone’s life—not just leave something FOR them. So, take the time to consider your values and aspirations, and let’s ensure your legacy reflects the life you’ve lived and the values you hold dear.
